9/01/11-- Announcing three safe, respectful educational, exploratory, and supportive groups in Bend:

Colleen Russell, experienced CA LMFT and Nationally Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) is now offering:

Group for Former Cult (or "High Demand Group") Members,  held in a healthy group environment, supportive of autonomy and connection, for those who have been involved in groups with cult characteristics including those identified as "Eastern", "New Age" , "Political", "Large Group Awareness Trainings", "Religious", "Mystical", and "Philosophical".  Participants bring up issues relevant in their lives, current and past with opportunity to have better outcomes in a group setting than in the past.  Topics often discussed include recruitment; indoctrination; the process of thought reform; critical thinking; reconnecting to oneself; trusting self and others; loss; trauma and post-traumatic stress; disconfirming inaccurate, self-limiting beliefs from ideologies; overcoming induced fears from the cult; reconnecting to society-at-large; developing more effective coping skills; boundaries; taking back one's life; goals; differences and commonalities; self-nurturing.  I have successfully facilitated this group for over nine years in Mill Valley and I am also a former member of an "Eastern"/"New Age" cult years ago.

Group for Motherless Daughters (Women Who Have Lost Their Mothers Through Death, Illness, or Separation) in Childhood, Adolescence, or Adulthood.  This is an opportunity for women to explore issues related to their lives, past and current, and to try out new behaviors in the here-and-now. Topics often addressed include recovering from loss; longing for nurturing mother; family of origin; step-moms; fathers; current relationships; trauma and post-traumatic stress; disconfirming inaccurate beliefs; developing more effective coping skills; trusting self and others; differences and commonalities; mothering oneself.  I have successfully facilitated this group for 14 years in Mill Valley, CA and am referenced in Hope Edelman's subsequent book to "Motherless Daughters",  "Motherless Mothers".  I also lost my mother when I was 15.

Group for Men and Women to address issues relevant to their lives, past and present, in a safe group environment.  Participants can recognize they are not alone in their struggles and successes; benefit from interpersonal learning; gain from validation and acknowledgement; and try out new behaviors in a safe group environment.  Issues addressed include  intimacy and relationships; anxiety and depression; family of origin experience; losses; traumas; goals; shyness & social awkwardness; effective communication skills; identifying and self-regulating emotions; connecting to self; negotiation skills; differences and commonalities; self-nurturing.

"I have a comfortable, spacious office in Bend's Historic District and require one individual consultation prior to group participation so I can understand the prospective participant's needs and goals and the prospective client can gain a sense of her style and knowledge.  In addition to group work, I have a general practice serving individuals, couples, and families and I specialize in cult education and recovery, "motherless daughters," trauma, and loss.  I am available in office and by phone.  I  relocated to Bend in April, 2011 from the San Francisco Bay Area (Mill Valley) where I practiced for 20 years and I look forward to meeting clinicians and new clients here.  Phone: 541-306-6081; Email:  crussellmft@earthlink.net; website:www.colleenrussellmft.com ."

Critical Incidents and Crisis:
Are You Really Able to Help When People Need You Most?

Presented By: Chaplain Jim Crowley and Chaplain Mike Dismore

This presentation addresses what happens outside the office as well as in. Accidents, violence, “acts of God” are traumatic situations that can and do happen when we least expect it, when we’re not prepared. Has your training prepared you to know what to do “at the scene” of such an event? Do you remember what to do when chaos reigns? This presentation will help you be more informed, more clear and more confident that you will be helpful if and when people need it most. Our speakers have both systematic approaches to offer as well as extensive personal experience in dealing with people in and around these difficult situations.

The SAFER-R model is a crisis intervention protocol for working with individuals. Most crisis intervention is done individually, one-on-one. Crisis Intervention applications can be made easier by the utilization of simple models. The SAFER-R model is a step-by-step model for working with individuals in crisis. SAFER-R stands for Stabilization, Acknowledgement, Facilitation of Understanding, Encourage Effective Coping, Recovery or Referral. The SAFER-R model was developed by George S. Everly, Jr., Ph.D., C.T.S.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), developed by George S. Everly, Jr., Ph.D., C.T.S. and Jeffrey T. Mitchell, Ph.D., C.T.S., is a comprehensive, integrative, multicomponent crisis intervention system which functionally spans the entire temporal spectrum of a crisis. Crisis intervention programs are recommended and even mandated in a wide variety of community and occupational settings. CISM is considered comprehensive in that it consists of interventions which may be applied to individuals, small groups, large groups, families, organizations, and even communities.
