Practice Description:  General Psychotherapy and Counseling Practice Serving Individuals, Couples, Families, and Facilitating Groups, In Office, Phone, and Internet

Everyone deserves the utmost respect for his/her process of healing and recovery in a genuinely safe therapeutic environment. I interactively and collaboratively help you with your individual needs and goals utilizing a psychodynamic, relational, cognitive, mindfulness and family systems approach.  As my approach to therapy is non-authoritarian and client-led, you take the lead on what you want to work on, at your own pace. In my 20+ years of private practice and agency experience, I've received positive feedback from clients who seek help with various difficulties and challenges in living. Typically, they report that they feel respected, safe, heard, and understood; that the work we do together has led to successful outcomes.  In my opinion, the psychotherapeutic relationship should consist of an equal power dynamic, and it must be compatible to each client so that effective work takes place. You are the final authority on your life choices and goals, not the therapist or anyone else.

I believe that recovery and change are complex, individual processes that involves many aspects including gaining insight and knowledge, interpersonal learning, and having "corrective emotional experiences" or different, healthier outcomes from what one experienced in the past. This can occur within a trusted psychotherapeutic relationship (individual or in group) and in other life experiences. Recovery is also a process of integrating the past with one's current life and disconfirming inaccurate, self-limiting beliefs that are deeply-held, experienced on both cognitive and emotional levels. I've observed that with an attuned therapeutic relationship, people often gain understanding and compassion for themselves, while they integrate traumatic experience and loss into a coherent narrative. Recovery involves identifying and changing patterns of behavior that may have worked in the past, but are no longer effective.

In addition to working with individuals, couples, and families, I am a Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) with the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) and I offer safe, successful, on-going groups, listed below. A Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) is a clinical mental health professional who meets nationally accepted criteria of education, training and experience in group psychotherapy. A CGP is an expert in group psychotherapy and an ethical practitioner who is committed to group psychotherapy. An individual consultation is requested prior to group participation so I can understand your needs and goals and you can get a sense of my style and knowledge. Please call if you are interested in any of the following groups.

For the past 15 years I have facilitated a Group for Motherless Daughters (Women who Have Lost Their mothers Through Death, Illness, or Separation in Childhood, Adolescence, or Adulthood) every other Tuesday evening, 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Women bring up important issues they are currently confronting to deepen their insight and gain mutual support for healing, change, and reaching personal goals. This may include focus on many experiences including the phases of loss and grief; longing for a nurturing mother; fathers; step-mothers; other relationships; other losses; self-limiting beliefs; trust; intimacy; communication; boundaries; family of origin issues; post traumatic stress; life as a motherless mothers; successes; challenges; and strategies for healing and more fulfilling lives. I am also a "motherless daughter" and am cited in Hope Edelman's book, "Motherless Mothers." Group fee is $40 per session.

For the past 9 years I have facilitated an on-going Group for Former Members of Cults or High-Demand Groups every other Saturday, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Groups identified as cults or high-demand groups share characteristics in structure and dynamics and may be "Eastern", "New Age", "Political", "Religious", "Mystical", "Large Group Awareness Training" and more. Former members of such groups join as an adult or second generation adult, those who were born and/or raised in such groups. Participants bring up issues relevant to their lives in a safe and healthy (non-cult) environment. Discussion often focuses on traumatic experience in cults and subsequent recovery; the process of thought reform; disconfirming inaccurate, self-limiting beliefs from ideologies; personal rights; healthy boundaries; vulnerabilities to cult indoctrination; family of origin issues; critical thinking skills; loss and grief; identifying, accepting, and regulating emotions; new roles; transitions; trust of self and others; effective coping skills; connecting or re-connecting to society-at-large; meaning of life considerations; individual goals. I have been active with the International Cultic Studies Association in journal writing and presenting at conferences. Fee is $40.00 per 2 hour session.

Group for Men and Women, time to be announced. This is a safe environment in which participants address and explore issues that are relevant in their lives, recognizing they are not alone in their perceptions and experience. Issues addressed may be related to intimacy and relationships; social confidence; losses; traumas; assertiveness; sense of self; communication skills; boundaries; self-acceptance and nurturing; anxiety; depression; jobs; transitions; family; parenting, and more.

I have a comfortable, spacious office in Bend and I welcome meeting and working with you.
