Practice
Description:
I provide client
focused, strength based counseling for a broad range of clients with
diverse needs. Clients learn how past experiences sometimes affect
current situations, and they can begin to address and master past
experiences. Unhelpful behaviors in the present often are a result
of distorted beliefs and unmanageable emotions from previous
experiences. By enhancing safety, increasing the ability to regulate
intense emotions, and using tools to cope with difficult situations,
clients are able to lead a more proactive lifestyle. This means you
and I work together in a partnership: You are the expert in your
life, what it means to you, and what you want to change. I am the
expert in guiding you through the healing path. Your goals for
therapy help us chart the course that is most helpful to you in
increasing your current quality of life.

The word “trauma” is used
to define a broad range of experiences. A
“capital T trauma” may be a major event that
has an immediate and profound effect on one’s life.
A “small T
trauma” describes those distressing experiences that may not
rise to the level of severe, but nonetheless have an impact.
These occur more commonly, but are often not identified
as something that is traumatic. This may
include a child who who experiences an embarrassing incident at
school, such as a sudden and unexpected illness, repeated bouts
of headlice, or being teased by peers. It
may include hospitalization, divorce, relocation, or death of a
family member. For whatever reason, these
distressing experiences get stored dysfunctionally in the brain.
This often results in emotions, beliefs, and behaviors
that disrupt one’s normal life functioning.
I provide specialized trauma treatment for children,
adolescents, and families with a broad range of issues. This
includes the use of play, art, and sand tray therapy for young
children. I have found EMDR to be very
effective in diminishing trauma, and use it where it is
appropriate. Most clients successfully
reprocess and desensitize traumatic or scary memories and report
improved self
esteem, well-being, and confidence. As
a client progresses, they reduce their sense of isolation and
shame to integrate their past as only part of their story, to
move past a tendency to define themselves by their problems.
This work helps clients develop a new narrative of their
lives to include themes of hope, productivity, confidence, and
competence.
