This is an intermediate-advanced course, which will review the ethical and clinical complexities of boundary crossing and dual relationships in psychotherapy and counseling. This unique workshop will incorporate clips from popular movies (e.g., What About Bob, Good Will Hunting, Deconstructing Harry, Analyze This, and many more) to highlight expanding contemporary research and literature demonstrating that ethical more flexible therapeutic boundaries can enhance therapeutic alliance and clinical outcome. The workshop will also cover issues of standard of care, risk management, and ethical decision-making.

The workshop will explore the ethical and clinical complexities of therapeutic boundaries, such as self-disclosure, gifts, touch, home visits, confidentiality, interventions outside the office, and multiple loyalties.  Special attention will be given to unavoidable dual relationships and transparency in small and rural communities. The workshop will also explore issues related to modern technological and Internet advancements, such as telehealth, e-mail in between sessions and texting during sessions, clients Googling therapists and visa versa, clients inviting therapists to be friends on Facebook, and much more.

Psychotherapists will learn to:

  • Utilize sound, ethical decision making in regard to the implementation of ethical boundary crossings.
  • Define and identify boundary crossings and boundary violations and dual relationships.
  • Apply interventions based on clinical rationales and knowledge of the law and codes of ethics.
  • Design sound clinical records concerning boundary crossings and dual relationships.
  • Integrate boundary crossings into their treatment planning.
  • Review current standards of practice (standard of care) in regard to boundaries in therapy.
